Made his CF debut in 2015 during the 10th GPX as the youngest driver ever to compete in the series. By the end of the season, of course, he was also its youngest world champion ever. He won the championship in 2016 as well, but was put out of commission in the 5th round of the 12th GPX when he and Randoll were involved in a massive crash. He sustained major injuries requiring intensive rehabilitation, eventually made a full recovery, and rejoined CF the next year, starting from the 5th round of the 13th GPX. In 2020 he racked up his 3rd championship, followed by a fourth in 2021.

Info and Comments:
Hayato is a hero in the classic anime tradition, right down to the customary spiky hairstyle. He's honest and kind-hearted, willing to make friends with just about anybody: let's face it, he has a codependent relationship with a talking car. And of course there's Kaga, who manages to be Hayato's closest friend and toughest rival at the same time. Hayato himself is hard to beat; not only can he go Zero, he also has special moves--the Inertial Drift and Lifting Turn--which, when mercilessly and frequently deployed, allow him to stomp all over the competition. Traction control, nothing. This is quite impressive considering that he wasn't a racer at all, back in the day: note the conspicuous lack of any real karting or junior formula experience on his CV. His deceased father, Hiroyuki, was a friend and associate of Kojiro Sugo, and thanks to a twist of fate Hayato ended up registered as the sole driver of Asurada, the racing car that Hiroyuki himself designed. In the years that followed, Hayato has changed from a goofy little kid into a poised and focused young man. And he finally got married to Asuka, of course. But even though she's the emotional mainstay that he needs to win, most of the problems in their relationship had to do with Hayato's involvement in racing. When under stress, he tends to put up emotional barriers that even Asuka is unable to break through.

Hayato likes curry rice, doesn't like parsley and celery. He enjoys riding his motorbike, and his habit is listed as... doing headstands? Well, alright, I suppose. He also flies model airplanes, if that helps. His family can claim homes in both Yokohama (where the Sugo family also has a residence) and England, which is where his mother Junko lives most of the time, in addition to the New York pad that Hayato bought to share with Asuka.

For some reason, anime has had a lot of overachieving adolescents lately; the magic age seems to be around 14 or 15, although people have been saving the world well into their late teens. To put things in perspective, the youngest driver ever to make it onto the F1 grid was Mike Thackwell at 19 years old, and he... well, he didn't last long, let's put it that way. The youngest F1 champion to date is Emerson Fittipaldi, who won the 1972 championship at the age of 25. Youngest F1 GP winner? Bruce McLaren, who was 22 when he won the US GP in 1959. Oh, and Juan Manuel Fangio holds the record for most F1 world championships won: 5 overall, and he would have been about 46 when he won that final fifth title. None of these records are by any means recent, either, although lately Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve both won their first (and for Jacques, only) world championships when they were 26. Which is sort of close to 25, isn't it?

There have been younger champions in open-wheel racing, though--Sam Hornish Jr., for one, if I'm not mistaken. In any case, let's do a little comparison: Hayato is only 22 in 2023, the last record we have of the world of Cyber Formula, and by that point he's won 4 world championships already. The first he won at the precocious age of 14, during his debut year. So he's talented, definitely, but bear in mind that having the right car and the right team can also boost a person's championship chances. I can't help but wonder how many championships Hayato would have won if he'd spent his career with, say, Missing Link, or AGS... alright, I know he'd win anyway because he's the hero of the series, but you get the idea.
